If/when we have clinical immortality somehow...
Non-disease death rate right now is say 1/2000 pa[1], which would give a life expectancy of 2000 years at first approximation. We'd probably try to improve that, but on the other hand some diseases will likely remain.
This is roughly the life-span of Tolken's elves... They can be slain in battle, or die of a broken heart, so the book tells us, otherwise they are immortal. Dying of a broken heart accounts for over a quarter of the above rate, another quarter are traffic accidents.
Our life-span will be long years, yeni unotime ve ramar aldaron...
Will we teach the trees to speak?
For the goth elves, five millenia of angst?
Time for works of great beauty?
Which of us will be there to welcome the new century? The new millenium?
