Recording culture

These days, anything even remotely important or interesting is recorded, as are many things that are neither.

Not so long ago, that wasn't the case. Take the Wow! signal — possibly the best candidate for a signal from the stars, it was averaged and automatic-gained to within an inch of its life. So, we go back to the original tapes, right? Except there are no tapes. Those six averages on the paper printout are all we have.

Today, that surprises us. We are a recording culture.
