Introduction to connectr

Keyword: connectr

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File What is connectr?

Connectr is a distributed social network. The eventual plan is to supplant Facebook; currently, it's roughly got the functionality of Twitter, slightly simplified.

Why am I writing it?

Hosted social networks are really quite unhealthy. For an example, see the current privacy brouhaha. However, the problem is more general — the incentives for the host are all wrong as far as the users are concerned.

How to get involved?

Join in! A social network is all about the users! The previous blog post gives the details. There's a PPA, so it's easy to install in Ubuntu and similar systems. The code is up on Launchpad, if you want to join in with the development.

It is missing a rather important part of Twitter's functionality: Windows support.

Gary, send a patch :-)

Legacy system support is on the to-do list, but it's not a priority for me; I want to get it working well on one system first. For that matter, I don't even have a Windows system to test it on. If you'd like to join in and maintain the Windows version, that'd be really good!

Heh, I have more than enough projects that I'm working on. ;)

Any chance of packaging it for multiple distros, if Windows is further down the line? I have an OpenSUSE VM that I use for testing stuff, I don't really want to install another Linux for one program. I'm told the OpenSUSE Build system is pretty good for building packages for all distros, though I haven't used it myself: https://build.opensuse.org/

Other distros should be much easier; connectr uses the standard "python setup.py install" mechanism, so packaging it should be just a question of doing it, and perhaps collecting the dependencies. I should put together a .tar.gz file, too, for installation on generic Linux.
